Dating game could boost wine exports Wednesday, 3 March C. Johnson, The Lab Wine – the new dating game Australian scientists are planning to use the tools of archaeology to authenticate wine vintages and detect additives. By providing objective proof of wine production methods, the technique could assist the entry of Australian wines into overseas markets. While verification is not yet required, it is important to “stay one step ahead”, the scientists believe. The researchers from the University of Adelaide and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation will focus on carbon , the naturally-occurring radioactive isotope, best known for its use in the dating of ancient organic material. Carbon radiocarbon in the atmosphere increased during the Cold War atmospheric nuclear bomb tests – when neutrons generated in the blasts interacted with atmospheric nitrogen – and then decreased in the years since testing ceased in An accurate record of the variation in atmospheric radiocarbon over the last 50 years was recently determined by reading isotope records in trees. This information, combined with precise measurements of isotopes in wines, will now be used to verify vintages. ANSTO’s giant mass spectrometer, the Antares tandem accelerator – can detect concentrations of carbon isotopes in red wine as low as one atom in a thousand million million, and so can reveal the age of wine to a precision of less than a year.

People Accolades Morro Bay, a historic fishing village located between Santa Barbara and Monterey, is the inspiration for these finely crafted wines. The location of the Lange Family Estate vineyard in the Delta region of Lodi provides for dramatic temperature shifts from day to night due to the influence of the delta breeze from San Francisco Bay. This allows for a slower maturation of the grapes resulting in a better balance of acidity and complexity in the taste profile.
Machine harvesting at night — cooler grapes, enhanced flavor concentration.

Leave the Armadillos Alone: About — cases of leprosy , which is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and results in nerve damage if not treated early, are diagnosed in the US each year. But a third of the patients had never traveled to locales with a history of leprosy. Many of them lived in the southern U. Armadillos are known to carry leprosy—in fact, they are the only wild animals other than humans upon which the picky M.
But it was hard to prove as long as both humans and armadillos were carrying fairly generic, readily available strains of the bacteria—strains that could have come from anywhere. Now, publishing in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists have sequenced the genome of a rare leprosy strain found in a Texas armadillo, compared with the strains in human patients, and found them to be the same—very good proof that the disease is passing back and forth between these species.
Armadillos are not alone in carrying diseases dangerous to humans: Less armadillo on the menu, for starters. New England Journal of Medicine, ;
Shepherd wrote the screenplay adaptation with Bob Clark and Leigh Brown. Shepherd provides the film’s narration from the perspective of an adult Ralphie, a narrative style later used in the dramedy television series The Wonder Years. Shepherd, Brown and Clark all have cameo appearances in the film: Shepherd plays the man who directs Ralphie and Randy to the back of the Santa line at the department store; Brown — Shepherd’s wife in real life — plays the woman in the Santa line with Shepherd; Clark plays Swede, the neighbor the Old Man talks to outside during the Leg Lamp scene.

When listing the dangers of exhaust fumes, death from carbon monoxide poisoning falls at the top of the list. However, death from carbon monoxide poisoning is just one of many dangers to be concerned with. Some of the dangers of exhaust fumes are immediate while others happen over a longer period of time and consequently, are not as readily apparent. In fact, some of the dangers of exhaust fumes hide silently in the background so that many people are not even aware of them. Study after study has proven that exhaust fumes are responsible for a number of physical maladies as well as being a danger to the environment.
As a concerned citizen on this planet we call home, it helps to be aware of the many dangers of exhaust fumes so that we can take steps to do something about this very real problem. Both gasoline engines and diesel engines emit exhaust fumes so the problem is more widespread and all-encompassing than you might have been led to believe. Multiple Pathogens in Exhaust Fumes Unfortunately, as if carbon monoxide were not bad enough, there are a great number of the other pathogens that contribute to the dangers of exhaust fumes.
Some of those toxins include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, polycyclic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde. Each of those substances is a pathogen which can have severe consequences both immediately and over the long haul. Medical science has established that many of these substances have harmful effects on bone marrow, the spleen and even our lymph nodes. As a matter of fact, the circulatory system is especially vulnerable to the toxins in exhaust fumes. Studies have shown that many of these toxins have resulted in problems in the bloodstream such as anemia.
Taking into consideration that carbon monoxide literally suffocates us it is no wonder that it deprives our bloodstream of oxygen necessary for so many vital functions within the body.

The brighter red the color of your blood, the more oxygen it carries. The darker its color, the less oxygen it carries. Arterial blood is generally a brighter red because it has recently passed through the lungs. Venous blood is generally a darker red because it has passed through the capillaries where the oxygen is transferred from the blood to the tissues.
Otto Warburg, quoted in Philpott , page Warburg’s papers in our Library: Lecture 1 , Lecture 2. When the oxygen saturation of blood falls, conditions become ripe for the creation of cancer. Oxygen is removed from the arterial blood as it passes through the capillary system. If arterial blood is deficient in oxygen or if the blood flow is restricted by blocked arteries, then tissues oxygenated by the latter stages of the capillary system may be so deprived of oxygen as to become cancerous.
Damage to the arteries also helps cancer spread throughout the body. See The Terrible Two:

Use of ozone for winery and environmental sanitation By Brian Hampson, PhD, Food Science and Nutrition Dept California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA Since the early s, ozone has been widely used for water treatment, including disinfection of municipal water supplies, swimming pools, spas, cooling towers, and sewage treatment plants. Recently, ozone has been used in food processing for sanitizing raw materials and irrigation waters, sanitizing packaging materials and storage facilities, and for sanitizing water for recycling.
Prior to , ozone could only be used for sanitation and purification of bottled drinking water in the U. Since then, wineries have embraced the use of ozone. Its use has been generally accepted and documented to be effective for barrel cleaning and sanitation, tank cleaning and sanitation, clean-in-place systems, and for general surface sanitation. This same trend of acceptance has been noted in many other industries, such as fresh-cut produce processing; produce storage facilities; food processing, including meat processing facilities; and, as noted above, in the bottled water and beverage industries.
In these industries, the ozone systems are generally permanently mounted or fixed in place, which makes management of off-gas and ozone monitoring for safety and efficacy relatively easy. However, in the wine industry, ozone systems tend to be mobile, with multiple operators in multiple locations. This makes it important that safety features and ozone management systems be in place and that the system itself be reliable and easy to operate.
Understanding how ozone works Ozone, or O3, is generated in nature as a bluish or colorless gas characterized by the clean fresh smell in the air following a thunderstorm.
